New Zealand Economic Commentary – June 2026

As we entered 2026, it felt as though New Zealand was finally beginning to turn an economic corner. Inflation was largely under control, interest rates had stabilised, and there were signs that both business and consumer confidence were starting to improve. The economic fundamentals were beginning to take shape and there was a growing sense of optimism.

The conflict in the Middle East has undoubtedly disrupted that narrative, not only for New Zealand but globally. Rising fuel prices and renewed inflationary pressures have created additional challenges for our fragile economic recovery.

However, with the conflict now appearing to de-escalate, shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz beginning to open, and energy prices settling back down, there is cautious hope that the recovery momentum evident earlier in the year can re-emerge.

Closer to home, New Zealand will also navigate the usual uncertainty that accompanies an election year, with the General Election scheduled for 7 November. Election periods often cause businesses and investors to adopt a more cautious stance while awaiting policy clarity, although historically these effects have tended to be temporary.

Interest Rates

Interest Rates

While it was widely expected that interest rates had reached their cyclical low point late last year, the outlook for future rate movements has shifted somewhat.

The resurgence of inflation concerns following the Middle East conflict has increased the likelihood of sharper and larger interest rate hikes.

For New Zealand, the challenge remains balancing inflation control with the need to support economic growth.

Interest rate increases are coming, but the hope is that the RBNZ does so whilst balancing the need for continued economic support.

Commercial Real Estate

Commercial Real Estate

The commercial real estate market has entered a period of consolidation as investors assess the implications of higher interest rate expectations and broader geopolitical uncertainty.

Transaction volumes remain below long-term averages, with many participants adopting a “wait and see” approach.

That said, sentiment across the sector remains considerably more positive than it was 12 months ago.

Pricing appears to have stabilised, debt markets remain supportive, and there is increasing evidence that both domestic and offshore investors are re-engaging with the New Zealand market.

Recent landmark transactions, including the sale of Auckland’s PwC Tower to an offshore investor, provide further confidence that capital continues to see value in quality New Zealand real estate assets.
